Played on a mix in June 1999, was convinced it was a remix of Friends Of Matthew but haven't heard any mix that sounds remotely like it on any versions.

Any ideas please guys/girls?

Really don't think it's that unfortunately. There's only 2 mixes vocal and dub and it doesn't sound like the vocal one.
