Hi

Would love to attach a few clips of tracks on here but totally clueless....
At present, managing to save 20-30 sec snippets from my itunes library onto desktop but then can't attach (get a message saying need to directly link to audio file or something?).
Otherwise 30 sec snippets are >1.5mb so I can't attach anyway?

I'm pretty rubbish on computers (got a mac), would anyone be able to talk me through the process in laymen terms?!

Love the site, been a huge help so far but really wanna get more out of it.

OK, let's assume that you have a working audio file that is 20-30 seconds in iTunes. You seem to have it in the wrong format, since the correct file size at 128kb/s should be about 512KB. Out of curiosity, how did you get your snippet down to 20-30 seconds by only using iTunes?

Anyway, Follow these steps:
- Go into the iTunes menu -> Preferences...
- Click on the "General" tab (iTunes 9) or on the "Advanced" tab (<iTunes 8)
- Click on the button "Import Settings" and choose MP3 and Setting: Custom
- In most cases, you won't miss any crucial information if you set the Stereo Bitrate to 64-128, the Sample Rate to 22khz and Channels to Mono
- Back in the main iTunes window, select the 30 second clip and then choose the menu Advanced -> Create mp3 version
- Select the converted mp3 clip, choose File -> Show In Finder and your clip should be ready for upload.

If this doesn't solve your problem, download Audacity and use that to edit and export your clip. Good luck!

Really appreciate your help, was doing me head right in! Just posted my first Id's so fingers crossed & that. All your advice worked a treat.

I'm getting 1 min snippets by clicking on a full mix, then File, Get Info, Options.
Then, simply put a start time (say 24:30) and a stop time (say 25:30) having clicked both boxes.
Next, click on Advanced & create Mp3 version & you're done. Only thing gotta remember then is to unclick the start/stop boxes or it'll simply play that one snippet instead of the full mix in future.

Just out of interest, does all the mucking about bit rate/sample/channels on itunes affect anything thereafter? Like i say, useless with computers & don't wanna cock it all up...

It affects the file size (lower settings mean lower file size), and it also affects the audio quality. When you are finished converting your clips for tuneID, don't forget to change your import settings back to something of good quality. Otherwise, you'll get a surprise the next time you import a CD.

I'm trying to get two tracks id'ed and can't upload them onto the site, I have them in Windows Media Player, but could get them to iTunes, I also have Audacity but have little or no idea how that works I try and import the audio files from Windows MP and it gives me a small .0001 sec snippet of the tune I want, HELP

I combined your methods and got there in the end.

mstoddy, I also have Audacity, and whilst it's great for transferring cassettes and LPs into a digital format, I couldn't get it to upload samples. More study required.

If you can get the track across to iTunes, and then follow the above instructions, you should have some success.
